Have you heard that you can make a simple steam engine out of a Coke can? First, you use a pin to put a hole in it and then empty the can. Then you add a second hole on the other side while adjusting to make sure they point perpendicular to the can. Then, you add a little water to the can and hang it in the air. When the water starts to boil steam is produced and it pushes out of the two holes causing the can to spin rapidly – as you can see. It’s pretty amazing that this same force, the power of steam, can be used to power a train down the track or generate electricity for a city. You can also discuss the energy changes that occur during this exploration. To start with, chemical energy in the form of Sterno gets converted into heat energy – heat energy in the flame gets converted into heat energy in the can and the water – the can heats up, boils, and the steam comes out through the holes and pushes the can in a circular motion while it converts heat energy into mechanical energy. Lots of cool energy transformations in a hurry.
